Things YOU can do to Protect Your Hair from Sun Damage.
We know the UV rays from the sun are harmful to our body, so we wear sunglasses to protect our eyes and apply sunscreen all over our skin, but often forget that our hair and scalp need protection. When you expose your hair to the sun for a long time, UV rays can damage your hair’s cuticles and leave your hair dry and frizzy.
Sun damage can affect all hair types and colors if you don’t take adequate precautions to protect it from the hot summer sun. Usually, the damage can come in the form of discoloration, dry hair, thinning, frizziness, split ends, breakage, and more. However, the good news is that there are things you can do to protect your hair and scalp from the damaging effect of the hot summer sun.
Use Hair Mask To Protect Your Hair From Sun Damage
Applying hair masks to your hair prior to sun exposure will help you keep your hair hydrated and limit the damaging effect of UV rays. When the sun leaves your cuticle open, it will absorb the nutrients from the hair mask and repair faster.
Cover Up With A Hat, Scarf, or Umbrella
Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, using an umbrella, or wrapping your hair with a scarf can provide additional protection from the hot summer sun. Aside from protecting you from the sun, hats will also keep you cooler by creating a shade. During summer, we advise that you go shopping for hats that will act as protectors and also complement your look and help you make a bold fashion statement.
Limit Shampoo Usage
Your hair needs its natural oil to stay hydrated and nourished during hot days. Washing your hair frequently with shampoo will strip your hair and scalp of these essential natural oils. We recommend limiting shampoo usage to twice or thrice per week if you have oily hair.
Resist The Urge Jump In The Pool With Dry Hair
Swimming pools and beaches are some of our favorite go-to places in summer. Although the urge to cool off is understandable, you should resist the temptation to dive into the pool or hit the beach with dry hair. Salt or chlorinated water can dehydrate your hair, make it feel dry, and more susceptible to damage from the hot sun. Always wet your hair, use moisturizers, or wear a swimming cap before jumping in salty or chlorinated water.
